The EU has been under fire recently by Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance after the European Commission decided to enforce fines on X. In retaliation, many people on X and especially Elon Musk, have been calling for the EU to be abolished. Claiming that they’re not a democracy but instead, are a bureaucracy.
But is this true?
The European Union has three main levels of government. The European Commission, The European Parliament, and the European Council. Of these three, only one of these has members elected by the European people themselves, the other two are selected either by governments within the EU, or by the members of the European Council with the European Council being made up of mostly Prime ministers selected by their parliaments, not directly elected to that position by the people.
The European Parliament has members elected by European citizens within their respective countries. The European Council has members comprised of the heads of national governments. And the European Commission has members proposed by national governments, with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, having been selected by national governments, and then elected by the European Parliament.
So the EU is a mix of democracy and Bureaucracy, which would mean that it is not exclusively a democracy at all.
However, is the claim that it is not a democracy but a bureaucracy still correct?
The answer to this is in the selection of the European Commission, which is the executive head of the European Union. The President is proposed by national governments. Not elected by the citizens. And most of the government officials are selected by parliaments. So in fact, the EU is run by a proposed Bureaucrat, who is proposed by selected PM’s.
The only reason why people claim it is still democratic is because people think that electing a leader via other elected officials in a long chain still renders it democratic. However this is clearly a step too far, and negates the fact that this person still wasn’t elected by the people. They were proposed through government selection.
People vote for a party -> Party then votes amongst each other for a Prime Minister -> PM’s then propose the new President -> European Parliament then votes on their selection.
This is a very long chain of processes that distances itself from the actual source of the process. The people. And in contrast to the US, where the people vote for their president directly, this amplifies just how far the concept of democracy has been stretched.
So to summarise, The EU is clearly not a democracy but rather a complicated bureaucracy.
And out of this I haven’t even talked about European corruption, the sabotaging of the democratic process via propaganda and censorship (which the latest White House Strategic Report just outlined.), or the fact that AFD party members in Germany are continually dying, with many people like myself convinced that they are being assassinated.
So no. The European Union is not a democracy.
It is a tyrannical bureaucracy that is actively destroying Europe through mass migration, censorship, and heavy regulations, all to benefit the ones at the top and the ones behind the scenes.
All whilst manipulating and gas lighting people into thinking it’s a democracy simply because people elect people who then elect PM’s that then choose a candidate to be elected by elected representatives to be president.
It’s misleading to call that cunningly disingenuous process a democracy.
